About this tune
Killavil is a parish in the south of County Sligo, best known as the birthplace of the fiddler Michael Coleman (1891–1945), and this jig takes its name from the place; its Irish title, "Port Shligigh," means the Sligo jig. It belongs to the South Sligo tradition, noted in print in Breathnach's Folk Music and Dance of Ireland (1971) and again in Flaherty's Trip to Sligo collection (1990). Long a staple of the session repertoire, it has been widely recorded — Dervish carried it on At the End of the Day, John Carty on At It Again.
