About this tune

Most players know this jig through Michael Coleman, the Sligo fiddler who made it famous on the 78s he recorded in New York; for years it travelled simply as "Coleman's." Coleman cut it in 1927 within a "Tobin's Fancy" medley, and it first reached print as "Coleman Jig" in Miller and Perron's Irish Traditional Fiddle Music (1977). The title now in common use was fixed by the Bothy Band, whose 1975 setting made "Tar Road to Sligo" the standard name.
