About this tune

The jig takes its name from Slieve Russell (also Slieve Rushen), a hill straddling the Cavan–Fermanagh border, from the Irish Sliabh Ros-ín, "mountain of the little wood" — which is why it also turns up as "Sliabh Rosín." The Traditional Tune Archive notes it appearing untitled in the Comhaltas journal Treoir before the title settled on it. A double jig in A Dorian, it has become a staple of the session repertoire, helped along by Lúnasa's setting on Otherworld and Mary Bergin's whistle version on Feadóga Stáin 2.
