About this tune
"Off to California" is a hornpipe whose reach runs well past Ireland: the same melody turns up in English clog dancing and in American old-time fiddling. Francis O'Neill, the great collector, learned it as a young emigrant in California's San Joaquin Valley and later printed it in his published collections. It has long been one of the most-played hornpipes at sessions.
