About this tune

Martin Wynne (1916–1998), a fiddler from Bunninadden, County Sligo, composed this reel and a handful of others in the 1930s, before emigrating by way of England to New York in 1948. A shy man who rarely recorded, he was taken into the city's circle of Sligo émigré fiddlers and passed the old Sligo bowing on to younger players, most notably Brian Conway. His numbered reels — of which Nos. 1 through 3 are the best known — long outgrew their composer to become session staples, recorded by Dervish on Midsummer's Night among many others. Breandán Breathnach printed a close setting in Ceol Rince na hÉireann II, taken down from the Sligo fiddler Willie Coleman.
