About this tune
The earliest known recording of this double jig was made on a cylinder by uilleann piper Patsy Touhey, captured by Capt. Francis O'Neill in Chicago in the early years of the 20th century; Touhey's name stuck to it, and it still circulates as "Patsy Touhey's." It also appears in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), where the second part leans toward the related "O'Connell's Welcome." The jig has held its place on both sides of the Atlantic, from Johnny O'Leary's three-part Sliabh Luachra setting — with a distinct middle part inserted between the usual two — to the contra-dance halls of America.
