About this tune
The "Whelan" of the title is Tommy Whelan, an East Galway flute player with the old Ballinakill Céilí Band and, by Breathnach's reckoning, a regionally influential player; the jig still goes by his Irish name, Port Uí Fhaoláin. Breathnach printed it in the first volume of Ceol Rince na hÉireann in 1963. It sits close enough to Morrison's Jig that the two are regularly confused. Galway fiddler Aggie Whyte recorded a fine setting with flute player Peadar O'Lochlainn.
