About this tune

At least two distinct hornpipes circulate under the name "Murphy's," and the one taught here is the G-major tune Francis O'Neill printed as No. 856 in his Dance Music of Ireland (1001 Gems, 1907) — not the unrelated D-major hornpipe entered in the mid-19th-century manuscripts of County Cork uilleann piper and Church of Ireland cleric James Goodman, which the Traditional Tune Archive catalogues separately. A commonly played session hornpipe, it also turns up in Treoir magazine (vol. 39, No. 2, 2007).
