About this tune
This reel has a long paper trail: George Petrie noted a setting around 1855 and judged it possibly Scottish in origin, and it survives in the Goodman manuscript out of mid-19th-century County Cork before O'Neill printed it in both The Music of Ireland (1903) and The Dance Music of Ireland (1907). It carries Irish titles as well — An Maidineog and Réalt na Maidine. Denis Murphy recorded a fine solo setting on The Star Above the Garter, the album of Kerry fiddle music he made with his sister Julia Clifford.
