About this tune
The jig takes its name from Garret Barry (1847–1899), the blind uilleann piper from Inagh, County Clare, reckoned among the most famous players of his century. Whether Barry actually composed it is unproven — the tunes that carry his name have close melodic relatives, so he may simply have made them his own. Much of its survival runs through the Clancy line of Miltown Malbay: Barry's music passed by way of the flute-player Gilbert Clancy to his son Willie Clancy, who is widely believed to have carried much of the piper's style and repertoire though he was born after the piper's death.
