About this tune

One of the more commonly played jigs in the session repertoire, this three-part tune first reached print as "The Bag of Meal" in P.W. Joyce's Ancient Irish Music (1873). It owes its familiar title to Francis O'Neill, who printed it in Dance Music of Ireland (1907) under several names, among them "Banish Misfortune" and "The Humours of Mullinafauna," from the playing of County Tipperary fiddler Edward Cronin, by then settled in Chicago. O'Neill had also recorded Cronin on a wax cylinder, and that cylinder confirms his printed setting to be a faithful one.
