About this tune
The name describes just what it says: a gander (a male goose) poking about a pratie hole, "pratie" being the Irish-English word for potato, from the Irish prataí. The double jig also carries a cluster of religious-sounding titles, among them The Monk, The Friar's and Port an Bráthair, which piper Néillidh Mulligan traces to Brother Gildas (Pádraig Ó Seaghdha, 1882–1961); Gildas had the tune from the piper Tom Rowsome, uncle of Leo Rowsome, who knew it as "Butler's Jig." Dick Gaughan recorded a well-known solo-guitar setting on Coppers and Brass.
