About this tune
A reel known to most Irish traditional musicians, Drowsy Maggie has carried well beyond the tradition into players' repertoires around the world. Francis O'Neill printed it in Chicago in his 1903 "Music of Ireland" and again in "Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems," and a distinct setting has long stayed a favourite in County Donegal. Its name has caused persistent confusion with "Sleepy Maggie," a fundamentally different reel. A third part, sometimes added to the usual two, was first recorded by Frank O'Higgins in 1938. Altan recorded a well-known setting on "Harvest Storm."
