About this tune
A sally garden is a willow garden, grown for the osiers used in basketry, though it also served as a trysting place for lovers; "sally" comes from the Latin salix, or the Irish sailleach. The reel spread largely through accordion players: Paddy O'Brien recorded it for Columbia in 1954, paired with "The Yellow Tinker," and he and Joe Cooley helped popularise it among musicians in New York. Breathnach printed Sonny Brogan's setting as No. 100 in Ceol Rince na hÉireann (1963).
