Behind the personal names this slip jig collects — "Dennis Ryan's," "Joe Ryan's," "Cathal McConnell's" — is an older tune the Traditional Tune Archive knows as "The Cock and the Hen." The "Dennis Ryan's" title points to a fiddler from County Offaly; the "Cathal McConnell's" to the Boys of the Lough flute and whistle player whose band helped carry it into the modern repertoire and printed it in their 1977 collection. Dervish recorded it on Playing With Fire.
