About this tune

This G-major march goes by a tangle of titles. Francis O'Neill printed it as "I Won't Be a Nun," after the Victorian song "I'll Go and I'll Marry and I Won't Be a Nun," itself set to an older melody. It also travels under "O'Sullivan's March" and "O'Sullivan the Great." Patsy Touhey recorded it on a wax cylinder for O'Neill around 1904, and Séamus Ennis later recorded it as "O'Sullivan the Great." The Cork singer Elizabeth Cronin carried a version under yet another of its names, "The Letter that He Longed For Never Came."
