About this tune
This began as a Scottish tune and travelled about as far as a reel can. Nathaniel Gow's Fifth Collection of Strathspeys and Reels (1809), where it first reached print, calls it "an original Isle of Skye Reel," communicated by Mr. McLeod of Raasay under the older title "Mrs. MacLeod of Raasay." From Scotland it carried into both Irish and American playing, and in the United States it took on a second life as the old-time "Hop High Ladies" and "Did You Ever See the Devil, Uncle Joe?" — a setting that resolves home to the tonic where the Scottish reel cadences on the dominant.
