About this tune

This reel got its name simply because concertina players were fond of it — it spread as "The Concertina," nothing grander. The west Clare piper Willie Clancy carried one of the best-known settings, learned from his mother, a concertina player and singer from Ennistymon; he played it in G, though it's now most often heard in D. It reached print fairly late and untitled, in Breathnach's Ceol Rince na hÉireann II (1976). The tune also travelled with the Doolin whistle player Micho Russell, whose name still attaches to it as a common alias.
